Established in 1982 By J. William Gallup and James E. Schaefer Gallup & Schaefer In a perfect world, our attorneys would always be available to answer our phone calls immediately. But, in reality, the lawyer is often busy with another client or is in Court. Unquestionably, people with legal problems frequently require their attorney's advice. Therefore, it is both important and useful to separate telephone calls to your attorney into three categories: routine, urgent, and emergency. Routine calls are made to leave a message to obtain the results of motion hearings, settlement negotiations, or to report any changes in the facts of your case. The attorney will note the reason for your call in your file. Consequently, it is important to call at a time when he or she is in the office. Ask your attorney to let you know the most convenient time to place routine calls to the office. This would also be an appropriate opportunity to leave a message for your attorney by using our convenient e-mail system, which is accessible by clicking on the word contacts. An urgent call is one that is important, but is not a true emergency. Your attorney should return this call on the same day. An example of a reason for an urgent call might be the response to correspondence or discovery documents. When you place an urgent call to your attorney's office, be as specific as possible with the office staff. Explain that it is an urgent call, keep from asking multiple questions, and stick your immediate problem. You have the right to ask when you can expect a return call from your attorney so you can be sure that you'll be available during these times. An emergency phone call is justified by an acute, dramatic change in your legal matter. These changes include:
It is essential that you convey the critical reason for your call to the office. Your attorney should speak to you at once if he is there, or by return phone call as soon as possible. By adopting this system, you will facilitate and enhance your relationship with your attorney and the office staff. |
